Ray Beery graduated from CCHS in 1949 and received a Summerfield Scholarship at KU He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and spent 28 years in the Army and Air Force, retiring as colonel. His credentials include BA in International Relations, MBA in Infonllation Science and the War College Diploma. In 1969-70, he commanded an Air Force squadron in Vietnam. From 1971-73 he was in the Executive Office of President Nixon. In 1975, he was the commander of the Vietnam Refugee Center in Florida. 

In a second career, he was director of Computer Sciences Corporation in Venezuela. He has been a teacher and president of the Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University since 1994, and has taught more than eight courses in the arts, politics, and computing for seniors. Ray lives on the Potomac River near Leesburg, Virginia. His wife, the former Helen Simon of Kansas City, died in 2005. He has three married children and six grandchildren. His three brothers and three sisters all 
graduated from CCHS from 1939 through 1954.
